Resources for Families with Children with Special Needs

Navigating the world of support services for a child with special needs can be very challenging, especially when the needs don't fit neatly into a category. The resources below are ones Kevin has encountered through his own family's experience in the foster and adoption world, and has found worth sharing.

Wraparound Services

Wraparound is a team-based, individualized approach to supporting children with complex needs. Rather than fitting a child into a pre-existing program, wraparound builds a plan around the child — coordinating care across home, school, and community with a team that typically includes a care coordinator, therapist, and other specialists. Families stay at the center of the process.

Special Olympics

Special Olympics provides sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, and other conditions. Beyond the athletics, it offers community, confidence, and belonging — for children and adults, in communities around the world.

Multi-Systemic Therapy® (MST)

MST is a family- and community-based treatment model for children and adolescents with serious behavioral challenges. It works across every system in a child's life — home, school, peers, and community — and focuses on giving families practical tools to create stability and positive change at home. It's particularly well-suited for children whose behavior stems from trauma or a difficult family history.
